Google confirmed their servers without penetration that this list seems to be a combination of passwords stolen from other small attacks, such as direct attack on the personal computer of the user to extract information rather than through Google systems.
"We absolutely did not detect signs that our system is controlled," spokeswoman Caroline Matthews Google emphasized.
Google also said that currently can not determine the account name and password disclosure may not fit together, but they have sent a warning to the account in the list and recommends that users should quickly change your password.
5 million is great, but the actual numbers are less than 1% of the total number of more than 500 million users worldwide Gmail. Security expert Troy Hunt of Australia also analyzed and found to be distributing this list was quite old, or more than one account has been changed to the new password long.
